Manning House is Getting a Makeover

By Haydn Hickson

You may know it as the home of theatre-sports at USYD or you may know it as the place you accidently got drunk between classes in first year, but I think it’s safe to say no one knows Manning as a bar that necessarily “goes off”.

Until now.

As reported by the SURG-FM Blog, Manning House is getting a makeover in 2019. Say goodbye to boring-old Manning and say hello to Manning Social – a chic, new space to study, chill and play.

Equipped with wall-murals of drunk monkeys, television screens and suspended artificial greenery, Manning Social brings three areas for students to hang out at: the bar zone, the chill zone and the study zone (but low key, you’re probably better off going to a library).

The renovation is well under way and will be done in time for its official launch on the 25th of February 2019.

When asked about the introduction of Manning Social, president of the University of Sydney Union, Liliana Tai, had this to say:

“2019 is a big year for the USU as we try to expand our offering for students not only through free membership but also more spaces for students to hang out and relax on campus. I’m excited for the new mini-bar which will give people a reason to stay on campus rather than head to Newtown. We will also be introducing a chill and study zone which is so important for our diversity in members, some of whom might just want a fun space to relax and read a book in.”

Kick Back at Manning Social will be open every Monday to Friday from 12 noon on the ground level of Manning House with beer on tap, music and - best of all - a $2 BBQ every Friday.

Also, better start practicing them front-hands and back-hands because Manning Social is also set to house a ping-pong table.

Looks like Courtyard Café’s got some competition.
