PULP RANKED: The Top 5 USYD Student Election Campaign Videos

By Madeline Ward

Campaign videos: they just don’t make them like they used to. Gone are the vaguely unhinged videos of yore, where election promises are articulated through musical parody and cultural reference. This season’s crop of candidates seem to favour snappy, text based videos over the cinematic masterpieces of the early 2010’s, so I compiled this (non-exhaustive) list for those of you that pine for better days.

5. James Flynn, In with Flynn

This video would make an excellent advertisement for a gated community in Sydney’s Bible Belt, or a fancy retirement village. An extraordinary insight into the dystopian future that awaits us all if the Liberals are re-elected this Sunday. Truly bone-chilling.

4. Jeremy Elphick, Pelphick Thrust

This Wes Anderson parody is a sublime cultural artefact from 2013, the same year of the Edward Snowden NSA leaks and the tragic passing of Glee star Cory Monteith. Note the Adventure Time campaign graphic and closing refrain of Daft Punk’s Get Lucky.

3. Various Campus Labor Hacks, Legalise it! For SRC

It’s been a long road to fame and fortune for Bachelor in Paradise star Alisha Aitken Radburn, a road that includes this choice cover of Snoop Dog’s Drop It Like It’s Hot. Who would have thought that our favourite USU Reality TV Queen was once spitting bars like the campus equivalent of Iggy Azalea?

2. Mina Nada, Better, Faster, Stronger

Unless Unity can pull Alisha Aitken-Radburn out of the bag in the next two days, this remains the most memorable celebrity endorsement in USU election history.

1. Bebe D’Souza, Beebee on Board
