5 Ways to Make the Most of Welcome Fest

By Nicolette PT

1. JOIN THE USU

If you’re a first year or wanting to join any societies this year, becoming a member of the USU (University of Sydney Union) is a must. Get access to clubs and societies, festivals, events, parties, gigs, volunteering and paid job opportunities, student leadership roles and more! And the best part is it’s free! You can sign up outside the Administrative Building at the end of Eastern Avenue (near City Rd). If you were a member last year, your membership will rollover to this year. Too easy.

2. SIGN UP TO YOUR FACULTY SOCIETY

Once you’re a member of USU, search for your faculty’s society on Eastern Avenue and the Quad. It would be a shame to only see your classmates...well, in class, so sign up to your faculty’s society to attend events, parties, participate in comps and make friends outside the lecture theatre. Trust me, it’ll help to have friends you can study, endure group assignments and celebrate with.

3. SIGN UP TO BE A PULP CONTRIBUTOR

Once you’ve signed up to your faculty’s society you should swing by and sign up to Pulp! A bit of sneaky self-promo never hurt anyone. But for real, becoming a Pulp contributor is one of the best moves you can make in uni life. Pulp is the University of Sydney Union’s (USU) online student publication. Becoming part of the Pulp team means you get PAID to write and produce content you actually want to produce while gaining great experience for your resume and meeting a bunch of creatively-minded student writers and videographers along the way. Catch us at the very end of the City Road side of Eastern Avenue until 4pm today to sign up in person or sign up here!

4. FREE FOOD IS A MOOD

It wouldn’t be Welcome Fest without treating yourself to all the freebies. Grab your free lunch at the USU food truck, then use that full-belly energy to check out all these events, tours, and performances happening today!

5. STUDENT MEDIA WELCOME PARTY

If you’re keen to get involved in anything media-esque from writing to radio, you should come to the Student Media Welcome Party. Come join the four biggest media societies at USYD, Pulp Media, Honi Soit, SURG (Sydney University Radio Group) and MECOsoc (Media & Communications Society) today (Thursday 20th February), from 4pm-5:45pm at Courtyard Restaurant and Bar on campus to mingle with editors, fellow writers, media students over pizza drinks. Fun!
