6 spring/summer fashion trends you need in your wardrobe

Sharon Chou peaks into the fashion trends hitting the streets and in stores this summer.

While it’s been a quiet year for the fashion world, the fashion industry still has something to say about the world. For those locked-down, quarantined and remote-learning in the Northern Hemisphere, here is Pulp’s must-read guide for summer fashion.

1- Head Scarf

This trend inspired by the 1950s-1960s fashion is making its way back this summer. Headscarves make a finishing touch to your outfit without overdoing it. What’s more, the soft fabric means it won’t hurt the back of your ears like an actual plastic headband (definitely what we need after months of mask wearing). Choose from a silky design with florals and out-there print, or keep it simple with bold colors and block letters. When styling this accessory, you can tie it above your head for a cute campus look, or behind your neck for a chic summer look.

2 - Statement Making Trousers

Ditch those work from home sweatpants for a pair of statement making trousers  - wide-legged, flared, long, or short. For those that are ready to try something new, this is the perfect trend for returning to a stylish look without compromising on comfort. for many others who are tired of sweatpants can try this trend. Choose a wide-legged or flared silhouette with soft, silky fabric to maintain the feeling of a sweatpants or look out for a bulkier fabric if you want more shape to your look.

3 - Large Hair Clip

Thanks to the increase in working from home, this large hair clip is an essential accessory. A convenient accessory to tie your hair up whilst cleaning up the house or studying hard, this is a practical piece for all folks with long hair. It’s also a low-effort accessory to be paired with something more casual whilst ensuring you look prepared for that video call. It’s also tidy enough for you to go out with by pairing it with a light-coloured dress to embrace the summer shades whilst being perfect for a high humidity summer.

4 - Metallics/ Sparkles/Sequins

Due to Covid-19 and half of the world being under lockdown and quarantine, social distancing has limited time on the dance floor. But with vaccinations taking place, normal life might just be on the horizon. When the time comes, there’ll be nothing better than a party to celebrate the return to our social lives. Make sure to grab yourself something metallic, sparkley, or full of sequins to celebrate the end of Covid (and to say goodbye to a year of sweatpants and PJs). You can wear it with timeless black and gold or silver jewellery.

5 - Fringes

When it’s time to make a statement in your outfit, fringes of all styles are the perfect way to go. Let the tassels dangle close to the fabric whether in clothing or in accessories - this is a trend you can rock any season or occasion. If you are going for a classic feel, choose a neutral color or even denim or if you want to stand out, you can choose from bold colours and patterns - especially with your earrings.

6 - Folk Inspired

Go all out this season with the folk inspired trend. The intricate tapestry of a folk look will go great with neutral colors or a more monochrome scheme. This trend is fun and easy to style into a multitude of looks.

Whilst the fashion industry may have been more quiet over the past year, it’s certainly not the end for the industry! Whether it be a post-covid party or the video conferences that never seem to end, there’s still plenty of opportunities to keep up with everything that’s fun and stylish in the fashion world.
