White Girls Guide To: Fisher Library

WORDS BY ELAINE JACKSON

We’re a few weeks into semester, and mid-sem break is rapidly drawing closer. Perhaps it’s a bit early, but much like listening to the right music sets you up for a good night out at World Bar, knowing your library is vital to setting you up for a successful semester. Fisher Library is Usyd’s biggest, complete with 9 floors of study spaces, books, and intense competition for desks. And honestly, if you don’t trust the 3.8 star review on Google, I don’t trust you.

Who Even Studies Anyway?!

I know what you’re thinking – I do arts, I don’t even need to study! All my assessments are essays! P’s get degrees! But girl, let me tell you: Fisher Library is your key to success. It encompasses everything you need to pass, and then some. You’ll find relevant books and journals for your mountain of essays, loads of different study spaces, and a handy (recently renovated!) coffee cart downstairs to keep you well-caffeinated. Make sure to grab a seat near a window so you can look like you’re thinking really hard about your essay when in reality, you’re gazing out the window thinking about chicken nuggets.

Ugh, I Just Can’t Work In Libraries!

We’ve all been there: you head to the library, full of good intentions, and find yourself binge-watching Gossip Girl on Netflix (again), swiping through Tinder, and doing anything but your essay. It happens to the best of us! My hot tips? Take a breather. Run down to Courtyard for a break, grab an iced tea, and use the minimalist aesthetic to reset your brain. Once you’ve run into half of your friends, bought a pizza, and wasted most of your day, head back to the library and pump out a few words of your essay. Hey, it’s better than nothing!

But What About Lawbry?

Take it from me, the Law Library is good for two things: completely silent meditation, and finding a cutie who can take you to Law Ball. It’s intimidating and really, really, weirdly clean. If you ever find yourself in Lawbry, don’t panic – head straight to the bathroom for surprisingly good selfie lighting, post half a dozen Snaps to your Story with the GeoTag (you’ve gotta let your friends know how hard you’re working!), and make your way back to the comfort of Fisher.

If nothing else, Fisher is just the best of the best at USyd. It’s close enough to Courtyard to justify a long lunch, has super easy access to Eastern Ave, and, if you get a good seat on Level 9, provides the best people watching over the Law Lawns. So grab your books, pick up your iced coffee, and I’ll see you in the stacks.
