VERGE GALLERY’S ART INTERNS BRING THE UNI EXPERIENCE TO LIFE

Take a closer look at your surroundings and bring life to your uni experience with ‘Exposure: Through our Eyes’, Verge Gallery’s on-campus student photography competition.

Snap a pic of your surroundings, incorporating the theme ‘through our eyes’, upload it to Instagram and share what you discover in your campus environment.

‘Exposure’ is led by the Verge Gallery Art Interns, a team of Sydney Uni students, who are passionate about bringing, sharing and creating art on campus. 

We chatted to the interns to discover more about Exposure and their thoughts on Art on Campus.

Tell us a bit about you

The four of us study at Sydney College of the Arts (SCA) in Rozelle. Ellen, Genevieve and Nina are completing a Bachelor of Visual Arts and Brigitte is working towards her Masters of Art Curation. We’re interested in allowing students to explore and think creatively when taking photographs on campus. By submitting your images through social media platforms, we encourage students to connect, share and discover the beauty that surrounds us on campus. We’re excited to lead such a dynamic competition – no matter what campus you’re at, or what you’re studying, we would love to see Sydney University students getting involved! 

Why is art on campus so important to you?

It opens up new ways of thinking and thought processes. Through ‘Exposure’, we aim to encourage ‘art of the everyday’ by sharing the beauty of our campuses and the variety of students’ experiences of uni life.

What inspired you to get involved in Exposure?

We wanted more students to get involved in incorporating art into their variety of experiences at university through the medium of photography. Everyone uses social media, which is an easy way to connect with your campus and student body. All it takes is a closer look at your surroundings and environment. 

Where will Exposure be exhibited?

In the lounge behind Laneway, which we’re hoping will add new life and vibrancy to the otherwise untouched walls. It is a space that will begin with 2D photographic work and possibly transform into something more, uniting our student body across each campus. We want Laneway to be regarded as a respected space for both a great coffee and engaging photographic display.

How can students help pick the winner?
We received a ton of entries on Instagram with the tags #exposureusyd and @usuaccess. We’ve selected the top 20 photographs and uploaded them to the USUACCESS Facebook page, and now you can help us choose the winner and runners-up. The 10 photographs with the most ‘likes’ will be printed, framed and exhibited in the Laneway lounge and will be in the running for first, second and third place. The total prize value is $300 in camera accessories thanks to Camera House. 

Each entrant must be a current USYD student and current ACCESS member.

Why should students get involved?

In such a high traffic environment, it’s a fantastic way of expressing the vibrancy of student life. Everyone uses Instagram and Facebook, so it’s the perfect way to involve the broader community. It’s easy to get inspired and to inspire others, too. 

Any photography tips?

Take as many photographs as you can, experiment with size, colour, scale and proportions. Be aware of your environment and just see what happens. Don’t over think it!
