2021 Grammy Awards: the weird and the wonderful

Masseh Danishyar catches all the best moments, the best dressed and the winners from this year’s Grammys Award show.

From the get-go, the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards was subject to criticism. From The Weeknd choosing to boycott the ceremony, to Zayn Malik addressing how the ceremony stood for “favouritism, racism and networking politics”, it became clear that the Grammys was losing its credibility.

However, the Grammys continues to be the pinnacle of all music award ceremonies, an accolade that all artists dream of winning from the moment they write their first lyric, hit their first high note, or compose their first rhythm. So, despite all the controversy that surrounds and will continue to surround the Grammys until Chief Keef wins his first award, we at Pulp present you with the highlights of this year’s ceremony.

THE AWARDS

RECORD OF THE YEAR

-       Everything I Wanted – Billie Eilish (WINNER)

-       Savage (feat. Beyoncé) – Megan Thee Stallion

-       Black Parade – Beyoncé

-       Colors – Black Pumas

-       Rockstar (feat. Roddy Rich) – DaBaby

-       Say So – Doja Cat

-       Don’t Start Now – Dua Lipa

-       Circles – Post Malone

After peaking at No.8 on the Billboard Hot 100, Billie Eilish’s ‘Everything I Wanted’ was both a commercial and critical success, serving as an emotional ode to her fame, where she eloquently opens up about her mental health issues even in the midst of superstardom, reminding the audience that she is indeed, just like anyone else.

BEST NEW ARTIST

- Megan Thee Stallion (WINNER)

- Ingrid Andress

- Phoebe Bridgers

- Chika

- Noah Cyrus

- D Smoke

- Doja Cat

- Kaytranada

With three No.1 hits on the Billboard Top 100, including ‘Savage Remix (feat. Beyoncé)’, ‘Body’ and her feature on Cardi B’s controversial hit single ‘WAP’, 2020 was undoubtably a year of acclaim for Megan Thee Stallion, arguably establishing her status as one of the most popular female rappers of all time.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR

-       Folklore – Taylor Swift (WINNER)

-       Chilombo – Jhené Aiko

-       Black Pumas (Deluxe Edition) – Black Pumas

-       Everyday Life – Coldplay

-       Djesse Vol.3 – Jacob Collier

-       Women In Music Pt. III – HAIM

-       Future Nostalgia – Dua Lipa

-       Hollywood's Bleeding - Post Malone

As the fourth artist in Grammy history to put three Album of the Year awards in her bag, Taylor Swifts ‘Folklore’ takes the glory this year. Considering every song on ‘Folklore’ appeared on the Billboard Hot 100, the album was ground-breaking so say the very least.

Performances

The restriction on attendance made the live performances trail in comparison to the performances of previous years. However, each artist who was given the stage tonight nevertheless managed to stun both the live audience, and the millions watching from the comfort of their sofa.

Here are what we think were the best performances of the night.

Fashion

The 63rd Annual Grammys was also a platform for all artists to make their runway modelling pitches. From Harry Styles’ boundary shattering, yet rather bizarre outfit, sporting what seemed to be a purple scarf snatched from his grandmas knitting collection, to Noah Cyrus’s angelic white gown, the Grammys was a fashion show disguised as a music awards ceremony. Here are some of the most wonderful and weird fashion statements.
