6 winter fashion trends you need in your wardrobe
Mia Castagnone looks at the fashion trends hitting stores this season.
Although we all feel cheated knowing summer is already over, we can’t do anything about the brisk breeze of winter that has arrived. So as we brace for the drop in temperature, let's get excited about the autumn/winter fashion trends we are seeing this year.
Sustainable Fashion
Organic, reusable, recyclable are the trend words in fashion this year. You’ll notice many stores have labels saying items have been made sustainably or made with recycled fibres - we love.
With being environmentally-conscious in our mind, it's no wonder organic colours like sky blue, beige, black, white, peach pink and earthy greens have dominated this year’s autumn/winter season collections.

2. Knit Vests
The best thing about winter is all the fun that comes with layering items. Knit oversized vests aren’t something new to fashion enthusiasts, but I still see them being heavily underrated in campus fashion.
Go for an oversized knit vest and you can layer with sweaters or turtle-kneck long sleeve tops. The oversized sweater is amazing because it can work with skinny jeans or tights as much as it works with wide, a-line pants.

3. Cardigans
Leading to the cooler months keep an eye for sexy winter cardis! Cardigans have come a long way and the ones we see today are probably a far step away from the ones in grandma’s closet. Popularised around 2019 the clothing began to merge its way into street style, thanks to icons like Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner who began wearing cropped cardigans with only the top buttons buttoned.
This trend became a staple and the cropped cardigans we see today now have as few as 4 buttons or sometimes none at all. This evolution of the cardigan-meets-crop-top became an icon over summer when we saw the cropped tee with ribboned sleeves appear in stores everywhere.
Go for a cropped cardigan with large statement buttons and bell sleeves or layer with a classic ¾ length cardigan.
Fabrics for cardigans are so diverse ranging from cotton blend to full polyester to 100% wool. Textures vary more so than previous years and we aren’t just seeing the iconic ribbed patterned but cute fuzzy materials have also become increasingly popular.

4. Vegan Leather
Your autumn and winter fashion wardrobe is not complete unless you have at least one leather item. Faux and vegan ¾ leather skirts have made a huge comeback with black and beige being popular choices. They’re the perfect comfortable choice to match any autumn/winter aesthetic.

5. Velvet
Forget your hoodies this year, and instead look for a velvet sweater. With leisure-wear continuing to dominate 2021, velvet fabric sweaters, and velvet long-sleeve tops have made it to many winter season collections and are here to stay. Oh, and do not forget velvet scrunchies!
A velvet top over boyfriend jeans or tucked into a high-waisted skirt adds a soft texture to your look that can elevate your casual Sunday outfit.

6. Chunky Platform Shoes
Finally chunky shoes, which have been dominating trends in Europe and Asia for years, have finally found their place in Australian fashion.
Chunky heels have appeared on all forms of shoes from sneakers to casual wear to heels. These days you will scarcely find a shoe brand who hasn’t added a centimeter or two to a design.
This street style inspired look is suitable for casual outings or even a night out. Not only do they look awesome, but they give you height without sacrificing the pain that traditional women's heels give. Head to your nearest Platypus or Foot Locker stores and check out what brands like Fila, Nike and Puma are doing.
