Mid-sem exams? Here's the top 8 sci-fi series to procrastinate to
Whether you’re putting off an assignment or having a night in, Maryama Vohradsky has you covered with the best sci-fi series!
Oh boy, have I watched so many TV shows that there really isn’t anything new on Netflix for me anymore. I could go on and on about the multitude of TV shows that I have watched and enjoyed, but I shall try (with difficulty) to give you my top 8 sci-fi series.
8. Locke and Key
Although a fairly new show, Locke and Key comes in at eight. I watched this series during quarantine and really enjoyed the magical world of “keys” established by this show. There are so many mind-blowing plot twists, an outstanding storyline, and lots of suspense. I loved the twists and turns in every episode. This is a great thriller, suspense, and mystery series, with an on-point performance by Felix Mallard.
Platform: Netflix
Genre: Scifi, Fantasy television, Drama, Horror fiction
Rating: 7.5/10
7. Star Trek Discovery
Star Trek Discovery comes in at seven for the sole reason that I only ever watch it with my dad. We both really enjoy science fiction TV shows and critiquing shows like this from the way Saru walks, to the confusion we have towards Romulans. This show has all the ideas of its predecessor Star Trek productions with a modern twist and an engaging storyline.
Platform: Netflix
Genre: Science Fiction, Adventure, Drama
Rating: 7.5/10
6. Doctor Who
The modernised Doctor Who comes in at six. I have always remembered when I first watched this show with my dad back in 2014. It was always an iconic show to me with my favourite doctor being Matt Smith. However, more recently with the change in the structure of the show, it just doesn’t feel the same anymore. It’s nice having the first female doctor but the vibe that Rory and Amy had, I feel is missing from the show. However, we will still always be big fans of the show.
Platform: Stan, ABC iView
Genre: Science Fiction, Drama, Adventure, Adventure Fiction
Rating: 7.5/10
5. The Rain
The Danish post-apocalyptic TV show The Rain stands in at five with its three seasons. Although the storyline and plot twists do at some parts feel comically silly and unrealistic, I like the show because of the general plotline, which centres around a sibling-duo who follows the developments of a deadly virus spreading across Scandinavia by rain.
Platform: Netflix
Genre: Thriller, Science fiction, Apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic fiction, Drama, Psychological thriller
Rating: 8/10
4. The 100
At number four stands The 100. I started watching this show in 2017 after a friend recommended it to me, so we could discuss it. We both got really into it and even had the chance to meet Richard Harmon. I absolutely loved the first few seasons of the plot. However, like most shows after a few seasons it starts to feel different.
Platform: Netflix, The CW
Genre: Dystopia, Science Fiction, Drama, Apocalyptic, Mystery
Rating: 8/10
3. Teen Wolf
Teen Wolf stands at number three. This show is one of my most nostalgic shows from the iconic characters to the storyline. Jeff Davis, known also for Criminal Minds (another great show), has brought an outstanding world to our screens. From the subtle comedy to the brilliant work of all the actors, this is a great show to watch. I most definitely became obsessed with Jeep Wranglers after this show.
Platform: Netflix, Stan, MTV
Genre: Supernatural, Horror, Teen Drama, Mystery, Thriller
Rating: 9/10
2. Manifest
At number two comes Manifest. This show is completely engaging and intriguing. You never really know what is happening and I’m always in utter confusion. But to say the least, it’s such a well-made show. The show follows passengers and crew of a commercial airliner which suddenly reappears after being presumed dead for more than five years. This is one of my favourite mystery shows that is instantly captivating.
Platform: 9Now, NBC
Genre: Drama, Supernatural
Rating: 9/10
1. Supernatural
The ultimate TV show coming in at number one has to be Supernatural. For as long as I can remember this show has been on my watch list. I never really fell into this series because of the daunting idea that there is 15 years’ worth of a show catch up on. But it was only until quarantine that forced me to binge it (all in a month), including during my HSC exams (whoops!). I love everything about the show and would definitely watch it again.
Platform: Netflix, Stan, The CW
Genre: Horror, Fantasy Television, Mystery, Suspense, Adventure, Action Fiction
Rating: 9.5/10
