NEXT BATCH OF INCUBATE STARTUPS ANNOUNCED
Sydney University is leading the way in entrepreneurship, producing the most startup founders* in Australia, with the backing of the University of Sydney Union's INCUBATE Accelerator Program.
Forty startups have come through the program since 2012 and over 70% of them are still actively working on their businesses.
The latest intake to INCUBATE includes a specialised Atom Microscope, appointment app's to cut patient and client waiting times, and a system connecting farmers with consumers to access locally grown, sustainably sourced fruit and vegetables.
INCUBATE looks for startups to join the program that are using technology to explore a broad range of applications. They are working on solutions to benefit business and society, while offering students the chance to develop their startup idea with the guidance of the best mentors and business advisors in Australia.
And it’s working.
In addition to INCUBATE grants, alumni Tzukuri, have raised $490,000 for their smart wearable technology; ‘sunglasses you can’t lose’, Edisse raised $320,000 to help bring their smart-watch for elderly people to market. B2B startup Vistr raised $175,000 to continue their growth, and Ureferjobs continues to grow their user base and client list, disrupting the recruitment market using the idea that “it’s who you know” that gets you a job - and they should be rewarded for the referral.
The latest intake are a mix of undergrad, PHD and Alumni. Undergrads are attracted to being able to spend their time developing their idea whilst they study, whilst PHD students enjoy the experience of working with Mentors, getting practical advice on bringing their product out of the lab and into the market.
“The Incubate program demystifies entrepreneurship at university - it makes this career path accessible and real. It’s not easy, but that's the fun of inventing the future!” says Atomology Founder and CEO, Peter Liddicoat.
The Founders of STEMN are building an Open Science network or 'Show and Tell for Rocket Scientists' for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics projects. The Founders are technically focused but have found that INCUBATE has altered their mindset for marketing and customer development. “We are eager to take on more challenges as we tackle the big problems" says Co-Founder Jack Yeh.
"We're looking to further develop our offering in the future, which includes establishing a seed investment fund and we’re looking to speak with individual and companies that believe in supporting student entrepreneurship by partnering with Incubate to assist program growth” says Program Manager, James Alexander.
