GOSS: Unity and The Moderate Liberals are BFFS Again

It seems like only yesterday that the “left” on campus was united in glorious co-existence, with trots, tankies and labor hacks putting aside their differences to deliver a resounding victory against the Libs. 

Apparently, some members of that (un)holy union aren’t too concerned with keeping the Tories out of their student organisations: Unity have run back into the polo shirted arms of the Moderate Liberals, leaving a bevvy of stacked AGMs in their wake. 

All’s Fair in Love and War 

Despite heading the Boost for Multiculturalism ticket, Pablo Avaria-Jimenez has been unceremoniously stabbed in the back by his former running mates. Pablo was asked to step down from running for secretary in the SASS AGM by presidential candidate Nick Rigby, in order to benefit a deal in place between the Moderate Liberals and Unity that would see key positions divided up in exchange for NUS delegate spots. Pablo told Pulp that “I for one am deeply upset that these two factions are trying to stack the AGM against genuine candidates like me, who do not support this type of behaviour. I am however still running as I believe I am the best candidate for secretary” 

Belinda Thomas (Unity) is rumoured to be running for secretary, supported by both Unity and the Mod Libs.

Gamers Rise Up 

The Unity-Liberal alliance doesn’t stop with the Sydney Arts Student Society. They’ve also stacked out the Usyd Minecraft Society, drawing on a previously untapped voter base: gamers. President and Secretary went to Unity, with the Liberals scooping Vice President and Treasurer. NLS were left with mere crumbs (roles as moderators, whatever those are). USU (and now Minecraft Society) President Connor Wherrett denied anything of the sort, telling Pulp that he “simply invited all members.” 

RIP Repselect 

Those of you that were concerned the total left domination of the 2020 council would result in a repselect sans fire alarm, fear no more! With all this bi-partisan stacking, its looking increasingly likely that the alliance between Unity and the Moderate Liberals could very well extend into next week’s repselect. Though the combined council power of both is small, with the help of Panda and Cupcake they could make 17: needing just one more councillor to swap sides to have a majority. 

That being said, this could also be a simple matter of Unity wanting the three NUS delegate positions that the Liberals have to offer, with a little USU preference deal thrown in on the side.
