GOSS: It Would Appear The Young Liberals Are Trying To Stack an Election

By Pulp Goss

Ah, SASS. That glorious Arts students society that has served many a liberal board campaign. SASS enjoyed a brief respite from serving as a Moderate Liberal recruiting ground this year, though it seems this will be short-lived: the Moderate Liberals, with a little help from their political frenemies Unity, are rumoured to be organising a sizeable stack for Wednesday’s election.

The liberals seem to have negotiated Unity’s support by trading at least one of their NUS delegate positions for Unity votes, as well as pledging their own votes to any Unity candidate that nominates for a SASS executive position (reportedly in order to lock NLS out).

There are currently two contenders for the SASS presidency: Katherine Anagno (unaligned) and Nick Rigby (Moderate Liberal). The Moderate Liberals have historically used SASS to recruit campaigners for the following year’s board campaign, with both Jacob Masina and Lachlan Finch serving as SASS presidents before winning USU Board Director positions.

SASS and the Liberals have had somewhat of a tempestuous relationship in the past: both the 2017 and 2018 elections were declared invalid, after being found to have been mismanaged under liberal presidencies.

Stay tuned for further tea.
