GOSS: Please, Not Another Election
By Pulp Goss
It’s the first contested SULS election in two years, so you could be forgiven for not understanding what all the fuss is about. This year’s SULS election: like a smaller, much less important but still slightly heated SRC election, will be contested by two tickets, Zest and Pop.
Zest Has Been Removed From This Chat
Members of Zest were removed from a group chat for International students studying law by Pop candidate Abbey Shi last week, after one posted in support of Zest within the chat. Both candidates, one of whom would prefer not to be named, and the other being 2019 SRC VP Dane Luo, were sent messages explaining that the removal was due to a “conflict of interest”. According to Shi, the chat doesn’t allow political or commercial posts, and members have been kicked out for similar offences in the past.
The Pop presidential candidate, Amer Nasr, was added to the group prior to Luo’s removal: perhaps “conflict of interest” isn’t such a great concern, after all?
They were later added back to a chat by Shi, though it doesn’t seem to be the same one: though it has the same name, this chat supposedly has different content. The plot thickens.
Naughty!
Zest aren’t the only ones posting in places they shouldn’t be! Pop were issued a warning by the RO after posting in the Sydney JD:2018 facebook group.
Ain't Nobody Fucking With My Clique
An anonymous source tells us that all of the people on the Zest ticket are personal friends of Isaac Morgan and Wendy Hu, “leading to a general feeling amongst law students that their ticket is quite cliquey”. Also, two of their candidates (Treasurer and Sponsorship Director) are currently overseas on exchange. Fun!
I’m Not a Liberal, You’re a Liberal!
Amer Nasr (Pop) campaigned for Joe Hockey at the tender age of 18 and currently works as an Assistant Adviser in NSW Parliament, though he stresses that his current role is administrative, not political, and that his time campaigning for Jockey was over 6 years ago. Dane Luo (Zest) is an independent who has run with and assisted liberal campaigns in past SRC elections. Perhaps the liberals can win an election this semester after all?
