GOSS: Trouble in Paradise as Liberals Beef over Hong Kong, and An Announcement

By Pulp Goss (由泡泡八卦栏目奉献)

Not Happy, Jan

Campus tensions over Hong Kong are beginning to manifest in curious ways: most recently causing a little trouble for our resident moderate liberals. The drama? Students for Liberty, a campus libertarian club that boasts a number of moderate liberals in its executive and membership, sharing and later deleting a facebook event for today’s Anti-ELAB Hong Kong Solidarity Protest.

We’ve heard from a number of sources that the call to delete the event came from within the moderate liberals, with certain members concerned that public sentiments in favour of Hong Kong would pose a threat to their SRC deal with Panda. This is something that has invoked a fair amount of ire from other members, including a senior member from years past who posted the following on their private facebook page:

“Students for Liberty refused to share a protest event supporting Hong Kong...Not because of ideological reasons, but because they didn’t want to sour a deal for the university SRC. This was all decided by wannabe factional powerbrokers and all but a few members of the exec”

Pulp hears from an anonymous source that the treasurer of SFL has since resigned, and that SFL leadership from off campus has since stepped in. We’re also told that older members of the moderate liberals are unhappy with the move, and that it was some of the newer ranks, including those up for the big positions in this year’s SRC election, that made the call. Interesting.
