Top 10 2020 Iso Trends

Nandini Dhir takes a look back at all the iconic iso trends that kept us busy while we were in our houses bored.

Last week marked one year from the day the WHO declared the COVID-19 Pandemic. That also means it’s been over a year since we had some of the most wild and random viral trends. So, let’s look back over the year with our list of Top 10 Iso 2020 Trends.

  1. Dalgona Coffee (February, 2020)

The fluffy drink that became internet famous at the beginning of isolation! Dalgona coffee making blew up all over Tik Tok and quickly found its way onto YouTube, and every second person’s kitchen.

With ingredients as simple as instant coffee, sugar, water and milk, the airy and fluffy consistency of Dalgona coffee had everyone trying it at home. Maybe because we weren’t able to go out and buy our regular coffee on our morning commute, sparking the desire to test our own barista skills during zoom classes and work meetings.

2. Cutting your own bangs (March, 2020)

Unlocking a newfound look for some, but a huge regret for others… cutting bangs. With the boredom of being at home and trying to introduce something new into our lives, the trend of isolation bangs flooded our for you pages.

Perhaps the idea of being in isolation and not seeing anyone, made the wild idea of cutting bangs not so intimidating. With people attempting to play hairdresser using paper scissors, curly scissors, and the occasional toenail clipper, we were left with some pretty entertaining videos, and new hairdos for others.

3. Sourdough making (March, 2020)

COVID saw the farmer’s markets and local bakeries shut for weeks, and months in some cases. Maybe that’s what ignited the trend of making sourdough bread from scratch. Either way, the idea of growing a starter, and creating loaves of sourdough bread appealed to us in iso.

Perhaps the idea of having time to try new things was new for us all, and sourdough bread was on the bucket list for many. It’s also worth giving a shout out to all the banana bread recipes that surfaced all over Pinterest and then Tik Tok in March, with cafe style slices made from home

4. Tiger King (March, 2020)

There’s not much to say here, except that everyone was watching it like a true crime documentary but talking about it like a reality TV show.

5. Toilet paper hoarding (April, 2020)

The epitome of mob mentality, the most unexplainable trend of them all- toilet paper hoarding. The iconic fight between two women over toilet paper in Woolies made global headlines. The words, ‘toilet paper’, even made it in the top 5 Google Search trends for news in Australia in 2020.

Of course, people were stocking up on flour, pasta, canned foods, and hygiene products. The supermarket shelves were emptied quickly, but somehow, toilet paper was first to go out of stock.

6. Zoom bombing (April, 2020)

If the generation of Zoomers had an equivalent to photobombing, it would be finding the password to random Zoom classes and making an uninvited entrance. With students sharing the links and passwords to their classes to popular Twitch streamers, we had got some pretty entertaining content.

7. Simping (May 2020)

Simp: Someone who does way too much for a person they like.

Thanks Urban Dictionary. The idea of simping started out with the viral Tik Toks, and perhaps it’s controversial, but it’s a meme machine nonetheless.

8. Among Us (August, 2020)

The game of sussing out other players and accusing online friends became insanely viral with over 200 million downloads worldwide. That’s like everyone in Australia downloading the game… eight times.

Released in June 2018, the creators of Among Us can thank Twitch streamers for it’s blow up in popularity. Let’s be real, Among Us got us through those slow days and player red is definitely sus.

9. WAP (August 2020)

WAP can stand for a lot of things. Wireless Application Protocol, Waffles and Pancakes, Water Action Plan, or Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion creating the controversy of the month.

Of all the 2020 trends the release of WAP took control of the internet with over 360 million views on YouTube, the #wapchallenge on Tik Tok and petitions to remove Kylie Jenner’s cameo from the music video.

10. Cooking Tik Tok

Tik Tok falls under essentially every trend listed here, but when it comes to food hacks, we were introduced to the revolutionary folded tortilla hack.

With so much focus drawn to at home cooking, the one mug wonders of microwave cakes became pretty intense, with quiche, cookies, pizza, banana bread and pies, all cooked in a mug.

Although the months of iso were pretty much blurred into one, the important things to take away from living in this Pandemic are: keep your toilet paper stocked, cancel all hairdressing appointments and say yes to whatever Netflix recommends to you.
