Local twenty-something-year-old secretly delighted at lockdown cancelling plans
Carmeli Argana reports.
A student at the University of Sydney has recently admitted to feeling relieved when a post-semester gathering was cancelled because of New South Wales’ lockdown.
“It was one of those events with a couple of classmates to celebrate the end of exams, the kind that you couldn’t say no to without looking like an arse,” said Tobias, a liberal arts undergraduate who recently completed the OLE unit, Developing Your Emotional Intelligence.
“Plus, I feel like it was a pity invite. One of them only talked to me because they needed my vote for the USU elections,” he said.
The recent lockdown has led to a number of other plans being cancelled or postponed, including the 21st birthday parties of your friends who had scheduled their celebrations after exams.
“I’ve never manifested for something this hard in my life,” said Bianca, whose cruise party is scheduled on July 10.
“Last April, my cousin had to cancel her hotel booking and host her 21st on Zoom. Those scribbl.io games and Minecraft simulations were brutal,” she said.
“Obviously, I’m ready to reschedule if they [the NSW Government] announce any changes, but honestly the worst part about this whole situation is the fact that I might not be able to use my Discover vouchers before July 31.”
NSW Premier Gladys Berijiklian has advised young people to take up other hobbies in order to pass the time, including “knitting, gardening, baking a cake, and rekindling the will to finish your degree.”
Stay-at-home orders will be in place until 11.59pm on July 9. More information can be found on the NSW Government’s website.
